There are two ways in which we can take on life’s challenges.
1. One way is by having an internal locus of control (control lies within you); You choose how you respond and whether you want to take charge, deal with the situation or find solutions within. In NLP this is often referred to as the “Cause” choice.
2. The other way is by having an external locus of control (control lies outside of you – essentially in the hands of others). You can blame others and wait for them to fix things or come up with solutions. Whilst this seems like an easy option as it absolves us of any responsibility it also gives the power and control to others, essentially leaving us to powerless. In NLP this is often referred to as the “Effect” choice.
Essentially each one of us decides who is in the driving seat of our lives – am I in control or do I give others the control?
Which one do you choose?
